He would talk about commercials on TV that would say "It won't wilt when you pour on the milk". And he would say, "If it won't wilt, I don't want it."
We like mushy cereal. He put one together for me and I rode that thing till the wheels fell off. My bike was really old, when I learned how to ride without training wheels, but it was a nice bike. It had the big curly handlebars.
Granny always was crocheting something. She made dresses for me, also. She was big into making Muppets dolls. She made my brothers Ernie & Bert, Cookie Monster, Grover, etc. I think she did the whole collection of Sesame Street Muppets, and then some.
She always had dolls for me. I never got a Muppet.
Papaw would take us to the store to get donuts. He helped me start carving out my car for the Grand Prix at Awana one year.
Granny & Papaw didn't throw ANYTHING away. Milk jugs, soap bottles, q-tip tubes (after the cotton ends had been used and cut off, boxes, plastic anything, jelly jars, you name it, they saved it, and made use of it)
I remember watching Granny make a pair of booties for a new baby at church in no-time at all. She whipped those bad boys out like nobody's business.
I'm so glad I decided to learn that craft... sadly after she died. I think she would be really impressed with some of the stuff I've made.
Granny was always busy. Mom wasn't much of a gardener, but Granny weeded our whole flower bed on year. There was nothing left but dirt when she got done, I think.
Granny also got down on her hands and knees and got all the stuff out from under my bed with a hanger. I still laugh about that one.
I was not the "granddaughter" they had in mind, I think. I was supposed to wear big skirts with saddle oxfords with my hair down and be all prim and proper. I was the opposite. I wore blue jeans and pony tails and tennis shoes and I acted like a boy, except for when I was in a dress.
In my teenage years, I was quite sassy. Not in a disrespectful way, but I could pick at people and make them like it. Still can. I'm also quite sarcastic. This is a trait you HAVE to have to be a part of our family. If you can't take sarcasm, find someone else to hang out with.
One evening, after my grandparents had moved back close to us, I was LAYING on the floor of their living room, wearing shorts, with a pony tail. Uhm, not lady like. I know how to be modest in shorts, but still...
I said to Papaw, "Albert?" (Mom said she breathed in real deep and held it for fear the wrath of her Dad).
He said, "Yes?"
I said, "I think you and I have known each other long enough that we can be on a first-name basis."
(Mom was on the edge of her seat "what's he gonna do? Uh-oh Sarah, lookout!")
He said, "First name basis, huh?" and chuckled.
I'm the only one who could talk to him and Granny like that and get away with it.

I also used to tie Papaw's shoelaces together when he would fall asleep in his chair. Don't worry, he never got up to walk without first noticing something was amiss.

I miss Granny and Papaw. They got to meet Abby, but they were long gone by the time Phoebe came around and I know they would have just ate her up and Tucker, too. I'm sad they didn't get to meet all my kids (and future ones) while in their earthly life. But, I know they're singing and rejoicing with Jesus up in Heaven.

The Carpenters & Bob Messenger

Do you know who The Carpenters are?
Then, you should know who Bob Messenger is. If you don't, go look at an old album. He's the flute player.
This dude can wail on the flute, like nobody's business. I wish I had the talent. Actually, I wish I had stuck with my flute playing. I could probably have the talent (or someone close) if I were to work at it a little. Not much time for flute playing between sewing, crocheting, knitting, cooking, cleaning, oh, and homeschooling AND taking care of my children. LOL We make time for the things important to us, and if that were all that important to me, you can guarantee I'd be doing it.
I digress.
I love the music of the Carpenters. I grew up with it, bc I had parents that loved The Carpenters. It's music that they dated to, so it was important to them. As long as I can remember, we've had some sort of Carpenters music around. 8-tracks, cassettes, CDs, etc.
I love the Carpenters and every now and then, I need a "fix".
My fave song is "(they long to be) close to you". I also really like "we've only just begun" and many others.
"It's going to take some time" has a flute solo in it that just baffles my mind. How does Bob do that?
Also, they have their own rendition of Hank William's "Jambalaya" (son of a gun gonna have some fun, on the bayou). It is sort of strange hearing Karen Carpenter say "me-oh-my-oh". LOL But, I love their harmonies and there's also a flute solo in that one.
I recently purchased their collection called The Carpenters Gold. It has songs on it that I haven't heard from them, before. Like The Mamas & The Papas "California Dreamin'" Not one of my faves by The Carpenters.
Richard has a little explanation about every song on the two disc collection. Some of them are really insightful, others are confusing. But, I really enjoy the music more when I have a little more background to it.
His memories of his sister are wistful, and not without reason. It's like he wishes he had paid better attention and noticed she had a problem before it got out of hand. He regrets allowing the biopic movie to be made, as well. His story behind Mr. "Gouda" (did you know it is actually Mr. Guder) is also very funny.
Anyway, that is what I've been listening to lately and my kids are loving it, as well.
I don't quite understand the whole song, but I like the lyrics on "reason to believe"... someone like you makes it hard to live without somebody else, someone like you makes it easy to give... never think about myself...
Also, I really like the twangy country feel to "Sweet Sweet Smile" and "Top of the World". TOTW is one of my faves... I'm on the top of the world, lookin' down on creation and the only explanation I can find.. is the love that I've found ever since you've been around, your love puts me at the top of the world...
And, to top it all off, who can live without Kermit's "The Rainbow Connection". (I also REALLY LOVED the version of this song peformed by the Tone Rangers on the extras of the movie DVD "The Break-Up"... harmonies are out of this world).
The Carpenters is good music, but it wouldn't be good music, I think, without Bob Messenger's flute playing. :)

DVD Junkie

That's right, I'm a DVD junkie.
I can't have too many DVDs.
I get a certain satisfaction out of tearing off plastic, peeling off stickers and anti-theft devices, and opening up a fresh plastic case containing a brand new shiny disc with a picture show on it.
2 disc editions are better than 1.
Widescreen is always better than Fullscreen. I'm a Widescreen snob. If they don't have it in widescreen, I'd really rather not, thank you. Especially if they have some that say "Full screen" but none that say "Widescreen". Why even bring it up if you don't get a choice?? That's just mean.
I have made an art out of opening DVDs. You don't just do it. You have to do it right.
ALL of the outer plastic wrap has to be removed. ALL of the sticker AND residue must be gone. You can't just slice the sticker so it will open and let that be it. Nope, you have to peel it off. And if some of the adhesive remains, you must use the sticker to remove it. Oh yes, it can be done. Don't leave sticky adhesive goo on your DVDs. That just collects nasty dirt and hair and goop. Gross.
Lastly, there is the anti-theft device. That black little strip of plastic-covered metal that boings when the cashier rubs it over the demagnetizer. If they don't de-boing it, then it'll make the alarm go off. I love the de-boinging sound. Probably something that fuels my DVD addiction. Anyway, they will hide that little strip anywhere and everywhere within the DVD case. Once, they put it on the paper label on a Warner Brothers disc.
All the Warner Brothers movies have a cardboard case, instead of the plastic ones. Ever notice that?? And... they are just a little taller than the plastic ones, so they don't fit quite right like the others do. WB always has to stand out. I digress.
I had to peel off some of the paper to get my deboingy strip off the DVD. I did not like it. But, sometimes we have to make sacrifices.
My addiction is not as bad as it has been, but when in need, a $5.50 movie will do. Sometimes, a $7.50 movie gets the job done just as nicely as a $9.99. However, nothing can beat a $19.95 2 disc edition with weirdo soundtrack or something "extra" to spice up the deal. That is for a truly desired new release.
New releases.... another blog, for another day.
I bought a movie today, can you tell?? And I haven't even watched it yet, but... it looks like I've had it for years.
Don't touch my DVDs... ever. I'll have to hurt you.

The New Eating Habits

Wow, uh... this is weird, the new blogger.
I just found out I had THREE OLD COMMENTS that had to be "moderated" whatever that means... but I was encouraged to find out that my reviews of products are not going unnoticed!! I got discouraged, but I may start back up.
I do have a review of a baby toy on my xanga blog http://www.xanga.com/sarahthepeach What an annoying toy!!
I came over here to blog real quickly about my new diet plan.
I'm fat. Yes, I know it. I've been denying it for years, but yes, I am fat.
My new plan is to be described, but I have to tell you why, first.
We went to Sonic after church for supper, tonight. Phoebe ate most of her burger, but I was stressing to her that she eat it all. She took another bite and complained that she was done. I started to fuss at her, but I changed mid-thought. I remembered something a Mom said one time about child servings still being too much food. A regular size hamburger is a bit much when you add fries and a chocolate milk to the mix. So, I asked her if she wanted me to finish it. Sure, she said. That was a good two bites of burger, let me tell ya.

I heard somewhere that our stomach is about as big as our fist. A burger, fries, and drink is way more than that... for a happy meal for a kid and a regular value meal for adults.
I said something to Sid about it and he said "no wonder everyone in America is getting obese" or something to that effect. You get the idea. Then, I said... I bet a child's meal is bigger than a regular person's fist in content... That's way too much food for anyone!!

So, I've decided to keep my meal portions to what looks to be about the size of my fist (if I were to lump all the food together). I will be hungry for a while, until my stomach shrinks.
When I am really hungry, I will first drink water.
We often mistake thirst as hunger.
I am eliminating sugar from my diet... not bc I necessarily think sugar is bad for you, but bc I have an overgrowth of yeast in my system. My body tells me it NEEDS sugar. That is not right. I don't NEED sugar.
So, less carbs, more protein.
I will chew up each bite thoroughly before swallowing. I will be more satisfied, taking longer to eat, and being full on less.
I will ONLY eat a serving size when I snack. Not the whole bag, not half the bag, a SERVING size. 7 quakes, 2 rice cakes (I love lightly salted.. they taste like popcorn) or one cheesestick, not two.
I am going to stop loading my childrens plates with food and expecting them to eat every bite. Plates are too big. Our food should fit on a saucer, or a small child's plate, really!!!

Sheesh!! Why are American's so fat??? I have a lot of leftover yarn that I like to ball up to keep it from getting tangled.
However, when I use the balls of yarn, they roll all over the place if I don't have something to keep them in.
In comes Snap Cap Lids.
It is a clear cannister that has a screw on lid, and then the lid actually has another lid in it that flips up. There's a tiny hole in the lid for you to thread the yarn through. You can take your project with you without the yarn spilling out all over the floor, and you can keep an eye on how much yarn you have left, etc.

It's really handy. It comes with a handle and everything.

They're pretty new. I got mine at Wal-Mart. The patent is still pending and their website isn't even really up and running yet. But, if you can find a Snap Cap Lid, it is totally worth the purchase.

Now, if I could get a good deal on a yarn baller.

These Snap Cap Lids come in two different sizes and run about $7-9.

Took A Turn

Ok, so I originally had this site pegged as a place to talk nice about my husband. I was neglecting it.
So, I figured if I was going to neglect something, it would be this site, with a different format.
I talk nice about my husband in every other part of my life, so I don't feel that I need to have one specific place for it. If I have to have one place where I talk nice about him, then that tells me that I'm not doing it enough. It should be a natural part of my life (which, it is). It shouldn't be something I have to remember to do everyday (because it is habit). But, I don't like the word habit.
Anyway, just wanted to explain why I changed what I'm talking about, here...

Sterilite Paper Organizer

I've been in the mood to scrapbook and stamp lately, but the thought of it tires me, bc all my stuff is in one big container and it is a hassle to drag it all out of the box, just for a few items at a time.
I finally broke down and bought the Sterilite Drawers from Wal-Mart that are 12x12 size, so you can put scrapbook paper in it. I had the choice between the white and clear or white and blue. I chose the white and blue. It goes well with my flippy lid boxes, which are also Sterilite. It all matches now, so it'll look nice and neat when I put it all together on a shelf somewhere (either in this house or when we move).

Just putting the paper in there, I had some room, so I stuck all my stamp pads in one drawer and then shorter cuts of paper in another drawer with my stickers pages.

I did a little more reorganizing with the stuff I already had and I like it so much better.

I wish I had bought the drawers a long time ago. $10 can save a major headache, yes??

Laptop Cooler

Sid didn't have anything to go on for what to give me for my birthday, so he settled on a neoprene cover for my laptop and a laptop cooler. Oh, and the full screen version of the movie The Prince & Me.
At first, I was like, "Eh? This stuff is ok." But, I have to say, I really did like having something to protect my computer while I wasn't using it, in the car.
But now, I'm really enjoying my laptop cooler.
This thing is amazing.
I used to sit and watch DVDs on it while I was surfing the net and playing games. The laptop gets really hot when you tax it like that. It gets hot just being used, without playing DVDs. Really hot. Even the touchpad gets hot... it'll burn your fingers, and that's not good.
And when the fan kicks on, it is blowing out hot air, I think...
So, this laptop cooler plugs into your laptop and it runs off of that. The cooler has an on/off switch on the cord going from the cooler to your laptop, so you can turn it off and on. But, it just has two little fans that run constantly... and they're so quiet, you can't tell it is on.
I love it. I wish I had asked for one sooner. Turns out, it was the perfect birthday present. I can use it with my laptop, which I love.
If you have a laptop and use it a lot... spend about $25 and get thee a cooler!!

Swivel Sprayer

I broke down yesterday and purchased something on impulse. It was up by the checkout aisle at Wal-Mart and I thought, I wonder how great those things really are?? For $3... I decided it was worth my curiosity to just buy the thing.
It was a Swivel Sprayer. It's a sprayer nozzle that you put on the kitchen faucet and it swivels around the sink in any direction you point it. You can also adjust the pressure so that it pours out like a shower or just the regular way.
I really like it, because the way it worked before, the water would hit the bottom of the sink and would spatter all over the sink and counter. I've been living with this for over 2 years now and we're thinking of moving and I've just discovered that my life could have been a lot easier (as far as kitchen work goes).
Anyway, if it is only for a few months or for however much longer, it works a lot better, so... I'm glad I spent the $3.
If you're dealing with a cruddy water faucet, fix it with a swivel sprayer. You won't be sorry.

About My Sidney

How'd you meet Him? I met him through my oldest brother. It's a long story, but big brother was a little freaked out at first by my immediate attraction to one of his friends and took measures to see that our relationship would be slowed if not stopped. ::) DH and I persisted in what we knew was real and right and were blessed for sticking to Dad's requests and commands of our relationship.
What neat-o things has God done or are you hoping for God TO DO in your friendship with your DH??God has really drawn us close together by seeing to it that we lived away from our parents for the first 4 years of our marriage. We really had to lean on each other in times of need instead of running home to Mom and Dad for every little thing that went wrong. It really makes a big difference.
What Makes Him Tick? (not Ticked....) Work makes him tick. He works too hard, really. His love language is acts of service, and it just occurred to me the other day that the reason he's always trying to get in over time and skip lunches is to provide for us with his acts of service. His job is his life. He'd go crazy if he didn't have anything to do during the day, I think. I'll be interested to see how that works when and if he's ever called to a church as a full-time pastor so that he won't have to have a day job. That'll be funny to watch.
What are his Hobbies ? Cars. He works on just about anything that anyone needs done to their car. If you have a problem with your car, you know to call Sid. He rarely, if ever, accepts payment. He merely charges for the parts and that's it. I don't think he would know what to do if we had perfectly working cars. Again, he'd probably go crazy.
What are some things that he's repeatedly expressed to you that he'd like to see you remember to do or get accomplished or focused on ? I think he'd really like to see me be more diligent in my homeschooling Abby. I'm not really great for homeschooling, but I'm trying. Lord knows Abby doesn't forget so she keeps me on task by bugging me all day until I finally set aside a time that we can work on it. I also think he'd like to see me at least have a meal on the table for him when he gets home from work. Or... at least know that I'm thinking and preparing for it. And, maybe be a little more diligent in my housework.
How are you going about making those things a priority? I've been majorly slacking on it lately. It's bad. I do make sure that the girls pick up the living room for Daddy (since they're the ones that trash it) and try to have the sink cleaned up. I also have Abby sit at the table during naptime and do school while Phoebe sleeps. I take time out for her to read her words to me, but for the most part, it is self-explanatory to her and I'm there to check her work. It isn't really hard for me, but I just have trouble remembering to do it and seeing that it gets done if she forgets.
Do you pray for your DH EVERY DAY? I wish I could say that I did. If he comes in and leaves again, I'm always sure to pray that the Lord brings him home safely. I need to pray for and lift him up each day. It really is so important as a wife to support her dh in prayer. I really do know this... I just need to be more diligent about practicing it. ::)
Are you investing into His life as a FRIEND?? I really like to think so. He's the one I can go to with any problem, gripe, funny story, or cute anecdote about the kiddos. We really do delight in the things our children do and say and it really draws us together to watch them grow and mature everyday. I feel I can tell him any and everything. He's a great listener and on the rare occasion that he needs to talk, I try to be there for him, as well.
Name 5 things that you are thankful for concerning your Dh or your Friendship with him.
1. He is my best friend.
2. He is the best dad a kid could have. He grew up with a less than acceptable father and is spending his time and energy proving that he can rise above that and be the best dad that these kids could dream of having.
3. He would do just about anything for me, even though I can do it myself. He does his best to provide the things that I want that he doesn't think are frivolous to keep me happy until I find something else I feel I need (but really don't).
4. I'm very thankful for his ability to fix just about anything... including cars. We have saved tons of money by having him fix things and only buying the parts, whereas if we were to take it to a mechanic everytime. I'm blessed to have such a talented man for a husband.
5. He is so smart. He's a great math tutor and he does it in such a way that you don't feel stupid for the things you've overlooked or forgotten to do. He would really make a great teacher. He's our resident math whiz. If you have any questions about Math, he almost always has the right answer RIGHT AWAY. I just love that about him.
Name at least ONE Scripture that relates to your friendship with Dh. If you don't already have one in mind...go find one and post it. I Chronicles 4:10 Oh that thou wouldest bless [us] indeed, and enlarge [our] coast, that Thy hand would be with [us], and that Thou wouldest keep [us] from evil, that it may not grieve [us].Jabez was a man in need of great blessing from God. He was a man of diligent prayer. He asked God to bless Him and God granted that which he requested. All we want of God for our marriage is for him to bless us and to enlarge our territory for his kingdom. As a preacher's family, that includes a lot of moving around and ministering to all kinds of people in need, so it's important for us to have a strong marriage. A strong hold to each other in times of distress and grief. We know we can turn to Jesus and ask him for help in all things. This verse is a true testimony for our lives together and we're continually asking God to guide, protect, and bless us in everything we strive to do for his glory and honor.

Long Time, No Post

It has been a VERY long time since I've updated. I just don't think much about my 2 other blogs. Xanga is my main page. It's the most fun and easiest to update. Oh well!!

My loving husband has been very nice to me lately. He usually is nice to me, but he kicks it into high gear when I'm pregnant.
He puts up with my laziness and sluggishness. My mean moods, my sad moods, my weepy moods, etc. He doesn't say much to cause me to feel bad when I'm already feeling bad. He just puts up with it and comforts me and tries to make me feel better.
This time around, I've been really striving harder to keep on top of things and not be so moody. I often fail, as a naturally moody person, but I think he can tell a difference. I hope he can.
I don't want him to feel walked on and beaten up and be expected to take it, just bc I'm pregnant. type='text'>Being a Housewife

What is so great about being a housewife these days?
We often get bogged down with the day to day chores without realizing how great it is to be a stay-at-home wife/mom.
What can be more wonderful than staying home and cooking/cleaning for the one you love? Raising his children while he goes out into the workforce to provide for his family.
**It is our duty to see to it that the family doesn't starve. Not by being the bread-winner, but by being the bread-maker.
How often do we 'cheat' and feed the kids hotdogs and cheese for lunch, instead of taking the time to feed them a well-balanced meal at every mealtime? I know I do.
More often than not, we have PB&J, hot dogs, spaghetti-o's, or something equally lacking in nutrients. What message am I sending to my children by feeding them the same nutrient-less foods, each day. By feeding them enriched with vitamins (translation...the actual food has no nutrients, so they are artificially added) not really going to absorb into your body lunches...
Why don't we take the time to cook a full-on meal everytime it is time to sit together at the table? And why do I find myself taking my own food into the living room to sit in front of the TV or into the computer room.... instead of eating at the table with them. Teaching them manners, not to throw food, not to put it on the floor and then eat it (bc we all know food tastes better with a little dirt on it).
I really don't know what I'm getting at here. I've strayed from my original topic.
My point is this... I need, we need, to feed our kids more nutritious meals and to take the time to sit down and eat with them. All that other stuff is junk, and it is the reason why a great percentage of children are overweight now days.
I know I don't want to contribute to that. I have my own weight to carry without adding to theirs.
**Another one of our duties as a SAHM is to make sure the house is clean. Put things in their place. Don't shove it into a corner or drawer until you 'get around to it'. You're never going to get around to it. If it takes only a few seconds to actually put it where it goes, then go ahead and do it. Don't put it off, bc you're only hurting yourself.
We also need to be teaching our children how to put things in their proper place. Don't let them get all the toys out at once. Let them play with one thing at a time. When they are done with that, they put it back and on to the next item. There's no need to trash an entire room with toys, just bc they can.
How young are we starting our kids out with helping with the chores? I only recently started having my 5 year old help out. Why? Because I didn't think she would do a good enough job... or I just didn't trust her to do a job that she is perfectly capable of handling. You have to let go of your 'neat freak' tendencies and let them learn how to clean on their own. Yes, it is ok to show them a better way, the right way, or help them fix it when they mess up. But we have to let them learn on their own. How else will they know?
So, now, not only do I have my 5yo doing chores, but also the 2yo. A 2yo is perfectly capable of folding a bath towel and wash cloths. They see how we do it and copy it. "Monkey see, Monkey do" There's meaning behind this madness.
I have crayon marks all over my walls from not watching my 2yo when she colors. How hard is it going to be for me to get that off? Not hard at all. Even more easy if I let her do it. Mr.Clean will wipe crayon off a wall with little to no effort.
**What are we teaching our kids when we sit in front of the computer all day, or sitting on the couch like a potato??? I can't count the number of days I have wasted away by sitting in front of the computer and/or TV. Why do we let these 'magic' boxes suck us in? Where is our self-control?

You're asking me now, what does this have to do with your husband?? Well, it has a lot to do with him.
I am the mother to his children. I am his helpmeet. And, if I'm not doing a proper job at home, then I might as well put on a suit and tie and go out and get myself a job and let him be the one to stay at home with the kids. It's easy to sit around all day, cook a 'last minute' meal and quickly pick up before he makes it inside the door from his car. Any idiot can do that. But, I'm an intelligent human being who is more capable of doing a better job on a healthier meal and a cleaner house.

I'm preaching to myself here. I haven't told you anthing you don't already know. This is mainly me telling myself to get off my duff and get some work done. So, off I go to do a better job at 'the greatest job in the world!'

The Chart

Ok, I put this out last night for my husband to see this morning. One is for fun, the other is a spiritual emphasis, and I haven't yet decided what this one is for. I like having 3, though.
They are all so different in operation.
I need prayers. I'm undertaking something that is going to take a lot of prayer, dedication, and self-control. It is going to be hard, but I already know it is going to be beneficial and the Lord is going to help me through it, bc I'm going to have to lean on Him only.
I'm also trying to remember to pray for my husband each day. This is something you'd think I'd remember to do, but I don't. I know that I want his prayers each day. I don't really know if he does or not. But, I want to pray for him each day.
He works hard for our family. Really hard. He tries his best to keep me happy. He does keep me happy. But, it isn't his job to keep me happy, really. It is my job to decide what my attitude is at all times, and how moody I can get. I can control that. He cannot, no matter how hard he tries. And I want to stop making him have to work so hard to do something that is really a lot easier for me to do.
Marriage emphasis?? I think that's a good one for this site.
I really love my husband (speak of the devil... he's calling me).... but I don't always show it. It doesn't reflect in my housework. It doesn't reflect in my cooking. I don't cook for him every night. That is really bad. But it's true. And he puts up with it without complaining.
I really want to change how I treat him. I imagine that if I were out working 10+ hours a day, that it would be really hard to come to nothing cooked. Nothing even remotely being prepared for me to eat. I don't know why he puts up with it, but he does. But, he shouldn't have to. So, that is another thing I intend to work on. Making sure he is fed 3 good meals a day. Without fail. Including me getting up and getting his breakfast (that's gonna be the hard one)... and having him a lunch prepared so he doesn't have to fend for himself by eating a yucky hotdog from the local convenience store. He likes them, but they aren't healthy. And I want him to stick around for a while. So, I need to make sure he is eating good.
That's all for now. I've done a lot of rambling, but I have some things I need to do if I'm going to turn over a new leaf. And sitting here isn't accomplishing a thing.
